The regional research focus on Africa was established when the University of Bayreuth was founded in 1975. Today, it encompasses all research and educational activities relating to Africa and the African diaspora under the name “African Studies”.


Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies
The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) is based on an almost 50-year-old tradition of intensive and excellent research on Africa at the University of Bayreuth. Founded in 2006/2007 as part of the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments, BIGSAS is now part of the Cluster of Excellence EXC 2052 - “Africa Multiple: resortonfiguring African Studies”.
Bayreuth Academy of
Advanced African Studies
Founded in 2012, the Bayreuth Academy of Advanced African Studies is a center for interdisciplinary research at the University of Bayreuth and has been part of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence since 2019.

The Iwalewahaus is part of the University of Bayreuth and is dedicated to contemporary visual and popular art from Africa, the African diaspora, Asia and the Pacific region.

Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies
The Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies (TGCL) offers structured and highly specialized LLM and PhD programmes to aspiring lawyers from all partner states of the East African Community (EAC) and beyond to qualify them for leadership positions in the region.
